FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
The school will be held at the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory – Rozhen , 5-11 October, 2009 with the support of UNESCO-BRESCE and OPTICON. It is aimed at graduate students, PhD students and young astronomers, to give them basic knowledge on spectral observations, data processing and analysis, and spectral characteristics of various types of variable stars.
Invited lecturers to the School are:
Prof. M. Dennefeld (France)
Prof. M. Auriere (France)
Prof. T. Ryabchikova (Russia)
Dr. F. Musaev (Russia)
From the Institute of Astronomy, BAS, lectures will be given by Prof. I.Iliev, Assoc. Prof. N. Markova, Assoc. Prof. D. Kolev, Assoc. Prof. R. Konstantinova-Antova, Assoc. Prof. N. Tomov, etc.
The program will be spread later.
Applicants from South-Eastern Europe and Russia, and especially from the Balkan region are invited to apply. The participants in the First Practical School in 2007 are also invited to apply. The approved applicants will receive full grant for travel (only by bus or train!) and living expenses at Rozhen, from our UNESCO-BRESCE contract.
After the School in Rozhen, there will be a meeting in Sofia “Challenges in modern Astrophysics”, 13-15 Oct. 2009, which is an OPTICON FP7 meeting, as a part of “Enhancing Community Skills”. Basic lectures on new developments in astrophysics will be given by well known EU astronomers. The approved students for the Rozhen School are invited to participate in this Sofia meeting, too. Applicants to the meeting in Sofia could apply to OPTICON (Prof. Michel Dennefeld, dennefel@aip.fr) for financial support for their stay in Sofia.
The number of participants for the Rozhen School is limited to 16 persons.

New control system for the 2m RCC-telescope
On March 26, 2009, representatives of the Institute of Astronomy and of the company Projectsoft (www.projectsoft.cz) signed a contract for the design and manufacturing of a new control system for the 2-meter telescope of the National astronomical observatory – Rozhen. The new system will fully replace the 30 years old telescope electronics and will guarantee for more effective implementation of the astronomical observations. According to the schedule, the new system must be put into operation in September 2009. This considerable upgrade of the 2-meter telescope is carried out with financial support by the National Science Fund (www.nsfb.net), project CVP01/002 (contract DÎ 02-85).
